Poe

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers
"

...a senryu

"

Poe

Thus orphaned, he was.

A master of the macabre.

Of death, foreboding.

I initially thought the pronunciation of "macabre" was three syllables. After looking it up on Google, I learned it is actually two.

simple and profound ... just like a senryu ;))) ... we love Poe don't we .. his dark foreboding emanations .. omens and still human .. and so we love him ... crazy eh!? you inspired me to brush up a bit on his life and i found this in wikipedia "the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, "brain congestion", cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other causes.[4]" at the ripe old age of 40 ... wow! when i was growing up the life expectancy of men (my Da) was 60 something yrs old ... cookies and cream to ya :) ... and tricks and treats too

It seemed appropriate to write three short lines about a man whose name consisted of only 3 letters. It seems that three lines is enough. A telling, succinct epitaph.

A most perceptive observation, Jibey. Thank you!
I don't think he ever got over sleeping in the same room with his mother as she was dying.

I never knew that. Thank you, John.
A perfect subject for this time of year and wonderfully put together. You have captured Poe's essence in just a few lines. By the way, I used to think 'macabre' had 3 syllables too. You are not alone :-)

Lol, it just looks like it would be three. Thank you, Dara!
Kelly, this is a remarkable work. The black and white portrait above your poem, and the font, make this a truly unique artwork. It's difficult to move the reader with three short lines, but you've succeeded.

Wonderful use of words dear Kelly. Poe, one of the greats. Like my favorite writer, Salinger. Left us with mystery and wonder. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

You are welcome dear Kelly.
Yes, it is two syllables. Ma-cob is the pronunciation. Well written tribute in senryu form, Kelly. You have certain authors and celebs you pay tribute to with your poetry and they are always a pleasure to read. Lydi**
