Age with Fractions

Age with Fractions

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Age with Fractions

We were the best of friends

and always told our age with fractions.

We both hated Math and asparagus,

tore away the crust from bread

and started noticing boys in the sixth grade.

We grew up through hand me downs and braces,

through years of sibling rivalry
and the constant humidity of the eastern shore.

We both married then moved away,
named our babies what we said we would in high school
and still exchange Christmas cards every year.

We were day and night,
black and white.

And told our age with fractions.

this reminds me of the opposite but same situation with my best friend since third grade....we lost touch for some years but are back in touch again...
we shared so much...and still do...i appreciate this write.
really love the whole fraction thing...but then we are only as old as we feel, right?

only as old as we feel...
really wonderful story poem.

You simply had to tag that half a year onto your age! ...or was that just us girls who did that? .. read more
A wonderful poem shared dear Kelly. I liked the memories shared. In the end, the people we loved and cared for. Our blessings. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

You are welcome dear Kelly.
Oh, now, this brings back memories... those fractions meant so much! We weren’t just ageist when I was a kid, we were fractionist!!! :):)

What a simple metaphor, day and night. My very best friend on the planet would be day to my night... you put me in mind of a poem I wrote a thousand years ago... if I can find it, I’ll post it.

Beautiful!!!

Deb;)
