A Modern Day Cinderella

A Modern Day Cinderella

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A  Modern Day Cinderella

I was all about the pencil skirt.

With my hair in a chignon

and a tendril or two

intercepting the linear drop of an earring.

On numerous occasions

I’d treat myself to café lunches at noon,

of chicken rosemary with an almond pilaf

and a goblet of a red Zinfandel.

I’d sit in a corner booth,

peering at the comings and goings of merchants

while unpretentiously flirting

with the gentleman in a guise of gray.

A modern day Cinderella,  am I.

Nestled  here in my over-sized chair.

With my hair in a scrunchie

and a tendril or two

clinging to the opening of a terry cloth robe…

as I read from the pages

of a Harlequin romance,

sipping my herbal teas till noon.

This was flirty, fanciful and a lot wonderful. I too love the contrasting stanzas, and really, my modern day Cinderella would be just as desirable in either of those situations. As for the romance novels, never hurts to dream a little dream and let off a little steam...lol. Loved this.

You are a star in my night sky. ...thank you, Crowley!
I like the way the last two verses contrast with the first two. The former represent the Harlequin romance version, the latter the reality. Damn it, there's nothing wrong with a little fantasy.

Sometimes, a little fantasy is all you need. Thank you!
