A Modern Day Cinderella

A Modern Day Cinderella

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A  Modern Day Cinderella

I was all about the pencil skirt.

With my hair in a chignon

and a tendril or two

intercepting the linear drop of an earring.

On numerous occasions

I’d treat myself to café lunches at noon,

of chicken rosemary with an almond pilaf

and a goblet of a red Zinfandel.

I’d sit in a corner booth,

peering at the comings and goings of merchants

while unpretentiously flirting

with the gentleman in a guise of gray.

A modern day Cinderella,  am I.

Nestled  here in my over-sized chair.

With my hair in a scrunchie

and a tendril or two

clinging to the opening of a terry cloth robe…

as I read from the pages

of a Harlequin romance,

sipping my herbal teas till noon.

This is such a well-meaning poem. Very feministic without the trappings of beig repugnant and reactionary. Enjoyed it.

Thank you for your visit, Julie...and the kind words!
From pencil skirt to terry cloth robe, I picture you mesmerized with glowing eyes as you read from the pages of the Harlequin romance novel. What a wonderful description of a lovely afternoon, sipping tea and fantasizing about the "gentleman in a guise of gray". It is no wonder that your poetry reflects this wonderful romantic musing over and over again much to our delight!! Simply delicious dear Kelly! ;-)

You've made my day! ...thanks, Dara. Hope you have a wonderful summer!
Ah, a real woman! No fairy tales here, except perhaps on the pages of a Harlequin. As you always do, you’ve created a scene we can see and feel. A perfect title, too. Good to read something new from you, Kelly.

I read a lovely, intriguing, amazing woman in your words dear Kelly. You have an absolutely deft talent for graceful language and mesmerizing subtleties, nuances of description. You are writing the many, ever-changing, layers of ‘woman-ness’ in these contrasting verses. Do I detect a Shade of Gray in the first verse?-hmmm. You are equally seductive, both in pencil skirt and bathrobe. Yes- the flirting tendrils....You go girl!

Your reviews are by far, the best! Many thanks and much love, my friend!
'modern day cinderalla' indeed. a very cool lady. can picture her & the setting perfectly through your great, soft, nonchalant descriptive words. an independent woman of possibilities living life on her own terms. really like this one Kelly... :)

Hello dear Kelly and you are welcome.
I see you have learned to please yourself instead of portraying an image to please others...

Well done, it is good on occasion to make yourself into another you as long as you remove the mask when you get home and let your hair down :)

I really enjoyed the way you have portrayed your poem so elegantly Kelly :)
