Dominion

Dominion

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Dominion

He was jealous

of rain that fell upon her

of night when she slept
for the time it had taken her

away from him.

Jealous

of shadow and light,

how intrusively they played upon

a monopoly of skin
sequestering the inventory

of a stare.

And he was jealous

of other men before him

of the prefix of syllables

lying in wait upon her tongue,

coveting her every word

like the dominion of a priest

to a confession.

Your presence here is most welcomed, Gene...and one I always look forward to. Thank you!
This is a beautifully crafted poem which explores and intrigues... The imagery and ideas blend together in a striking reflection of a jealous lover's desire to possess and control... Not a happy thought but real enough... 'Jealous of the prefix of syllables lying in wait''... That certainly made me sit up and think... The priestly analogy said much to me too. A strong, powerful poem.

Hello, Kelly! :)
She must be very special, and he needs to breathe and keep himself under control. I think he has some issues.

...thank you so much!
It is too bad that the person doesn't understand that if you truly love someone, they must have their freedom. They can't possibly love you back if they feel everything they say or do will come under negative scrutiny. I hope this is what you were getting at.

Take care - Dave

Thank you, Dave. It certainly is a topic well defined in the feedback I am getting.
dear Kelly... I read your poem as a positive feeling... it can be a poetic
gesture. However in real life, it would depend on whether he (or she)
would mentally abuse his or her peace of mind. We are attracted to each other
by nature; so it takes maturity and a sensibility to keep the attraction within limits.
It takes a lot of confidence in oneself to be secure, and it is a blessing when the
partner protects that sensibility. Therein lies the pearl of wisdom. I do see the beauty
of admiration in your poem. To be like gentle rain on your lover is a gift to be
cherished always in a storm or on a quiet summer day. truly, Pat

Excellent presentation, your image flows and builds accordingly. those who desire to pose never get to enjoy the true beauty and depth of person they desire.

I agree with you, Stella. This was just conjecture on my part. Hopefully, I'll never really know.

it does happen tho' men often do try to control their women ..
and there is nothing that will chase her away faster than kneeling in that confession and getting blasted by the priest for past digressions...even when they have nothing to do with present company.
Jealousy is such a disaster.
i have experienced it kill my relationships from both sides.
this is so well expressed in metaphors...the catholic guilt angle...and those syllables that get off mid-tongue because he already fills in blanks erroneously.

Jealousy can kill off love. We must allow love to be free like a butterfly and allow love to know free-range. If we lock the door and keep love stored away. She will run away from us. I loved your words dear Kelly. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.
