Dominion

Dominion

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Dominion

He was jealous

of rain that fell upon her

of night when she slept
for the time it had taken her

away from him.

Jealous

of shadow and light,

how intrusively they played upon

a monopoly of skin
sequestering the inventory

of a stare.

And he was jealous

of other men before him

of the prefix of syllables

lying in wait upon her tongue,

coveting her every word

like the dominion of a priest

to a confession.

I love everything about this except for the fact that it was not I who penned this or who first found the thought and idea. I just loved this. He was jealous of anything that toke time with her away from him. Wonderful.

You know how some pieces take on a sense of endearment after writing them? This one was that for me... read more
Men like this are absolutely terrifying. As an object of his affection, you become his possession. These men can turn into demons. The green eye can become an evil eye real quick. Initially, while attractive, this jealousy can do great harm. Beautiful darkness here.

You've made my day...quite frankly, you've made my week! Thank you so much, Larq!
Oh, now, that’s just amazingly dark emotion and metaphor, not to mention the sense of wrongness in the jealousy itself. Imagery that speaks like an aria to a fluttering inside of us.:):)

I think there are many women who could read This and nod their heads in understanding.

Thank you so much, Edie. So sorry I overlooked you!
Loved this. I especially liked
"Jealous/of shadow and light/,how intrusively they played upon /a monopoly of skin/sequestering the inventory/of a stare. "
Hope I might be OK to tell you that for me the word "monopoly" made a bump as I slid through yr prose. I know it means not just "most," but "all, which you just might be trying to insist. For me, a bump nonetheless. Thanx for listening. (and writing) g.r.

This is fantastic - possessive love turned jealousy, anxiety of all those potential people and things which could become a threat to your love. There is a dark undertone, some people can take this jealousy too far. Great write,

Thank you so much, Laura. Good to meet someone new!
Every word Kelly smoulders with emotional abandonment and portrays the insecurities and fears of a man with a poor self image. Anger transports its self onto the woman who has done nothing to fuel his rage.
Wonderful imagery.

...always a pleasure, Will. Thank you so much!
Here I clearly see the control freak, the manipulator, the truly sad individual whose suffers his humanity and wants everyone else to do the same . . . this hits close to home in several ways. Thanks for posting.
A tough poem done with sensitivity and not rage.

“Scary biscuits!”-as our old friend Lorry would say dear Kelly. Dark and dramatic offering filled with dread for the victim of such a jealous lover. Your photo, perfect title and web of eloquent, passionate words speak of intimidation and submission, obsession and ownership, punishment and penance...when the fine line of adoration is crossed in a “monopoly of skin”. You masterfully describe the spider as it stalks its prey, keeping it entangled, overwhelmed, ‘owned’. This is an important poem that speaks to seduction versus sacrilege. It is a warning well taken , my friend. Kudos!
