MacArthur's Park

MacArthur's Park

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

It was MacArthur’s Park

where we walked in crusts of snow,

talking of Christmases past

and how welcomed spring would be

with daffodils in a window box.

It was early March.

A northeast wind was beckoning at our backs.

Soon the dogwood trees would be in bloom,

with a hum of mowers ubiquitously heard

manicuring lawns in emerald green.

Dear Kelly.. you have somehow managed to capture here those very moments that do in real time seem to hover or to linger between frozen winter expanse and the anticipated gentle more intimate warmth of a more familiar spring garden... I can only imagine the scent of those dogwood trees, but I bet they are lovely too :)

This walk rings sad and happy simultaneously to me. I (me) feel a sense of longing for spring too... but in your words the longing seems to go a bit further. a very natural cadence and flow in these words you painted

Not seen any snow this year either, and my sledge is ready to rock. Changing times right enough.

From the depths of winter to spring and rebirth. Wonderful imagery Kelly in this short write. I could smell the freshly cut grass, beautifully manicured. Spring, such a season of optimism. Happens to be my favourite season. I always look forward to your new postings.

My pleasure Kelly.
Wow, this poem is such a visual treat. I yearn for poems like these, which are just the correct mixture of pretty scenes, without sounding too superfluous. I don't think I'd be able to pick any one line as my favourite, as they all are stitched together so well. In my library! ❤

A beautiful vignette that, in words and image, takes us from the b&w of winter to the colorful awakening of spring. I love your walk in MacArthur’s Park Kelly- two people strolling, cocooned in a snowy white reverie of dearly held memories. This is a poem that you hold to your heart when the weather is cold. Lovely write.
