More like Her

More like Her

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

More like Her

I was freckled

from too many summers on the California coast.

I loved you then

when you belonged to someone else,

when I was full of poetry that voiced itself

in angst and melodic offerings

of Janis Ian songs.

How I wished it were me

who had your name,

whose rounded shoulders were as traversed

as the pages of an atlas

within your hands…

perhaps if I

had been more like her.

Perhaps you could never be like her...for you are fabulously and mysteriously...YOU! Aren't you AMAZING! I wouldn't want you any other way...and neither should they!

Eve, thank you for the warmth your words bring me today!
Ah wanting that which belongs to some one is sin.... isn't that what's we are told as kids and we never learn the lesson.... even as grown ups...we often want and desire things which is not in our fate and then the sadness and wanting and the heartbreak... like a slow black and white movie it keeps playing on...
This one moved me a lot... beautifully done Kelly...

You are so kind, Giullia. Thank you so much!

I fancy the idea one gives away even their own identity and originality just to be with someone, just to be owned by someone. Love the idea wrapped in this beautiful poem. Cheers!

Very much appreciate your time and review. Thank you!
Not only the pain of love, but the pain of love that was unrequited. Why, I often wonder, do poets find it so easy to bare our hearts, our very souls to the scrutiny of others?

Take care - Dave

Words to feel and recognise. What's more, you lay them with a touch of class. What still seems to be a refined need for what has .. flown, is still almost too easy to find.

If in need, please, dear you... just ask. Smiles and an occasional 'hug' going free!
Standing in this moment of you, looking back, wondering, comparing lives and lights. I realize in poetry that sun-kissed freckles are sacred signs, and that there is so much more inside than a smooth surface could ever be. Such an achingly beautiful, bittersweet cup.

There is a kind of sad beauty to this. In all honesty, I feel like I've been privy to thoughts so personal that I shouldn't have looked. But, that is what artists do--we bare our souls.
