An Epitaph to Summer

I am bidding farewell to summer.

Muted fragments of June and July
have all been tucked away

like Zuzu’s petals,
and August is tarrying long by the door
dragging its feet like a misbehaved child.

Farewell summer.

We’ll meet again in the serendipity of April,

on the back porch of May

when daffodils commence to bloom.

Where watercolor sunsets

will lead me to walk in skirted hems
the McCartney paths of yesterday.

I particularly enjoyed your positive and optimistic view of the passing of summer. Your words made feel as though it would return before it had been missed, rather than the usual concept of a long spell of gloom.

That made me feel all warm inside. And then a little sad, but, also a little hopeful.

Well done. That was some good poetry... it paints a nice picture.

Thank you, D. Much appreciate the warmth of your words!
Ohhh Kelly!! I love this sooo much!! August tarrying and dragging its feet like a misbehaving child? And the serendipity of April-gahhhh!!! My favorite line of all: the McCartney path of yesterday.... ohhhh how I love your reference to the greatest band ever! As per usual, a stroke of literary brilliance with your subtle nods to the classics I so adore!!

While summer’s passing is spun in a lovely tribute, the mood of the poem is still accepting and reflective of all that summer had to offer and hopeful about what’s to come. Were that not the case, August wouldn’t be a “misbehaving” child; instead he’d be a wild, free spirit, encouraged to roam freely and take up as much room and playtime as he wanted.. only when he was fully exhausted, by default would he willingly hand over the reins to September ;)

Bravo, PIC!!! X consider the fall leaves at your feet now but wayward roses of my admiration. X

That's the best thing about September, isn't it? How everything changes. Thank you, Sam!
This is so tenderly crafted with the warmest, sweetest winds. Beautifully touching ode, making me ache the passing of summer already. I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley in Central California where it could be 100 degrees for a month at a time, so I thrive in the fire. The whisper of Zuzu'a petals made me smile... such a joy in remembrances.

Oh yes...that last line is fabby!!! And the feel of the whole thing is so spot on. Here autumn doesn't come until late October most years. The quality of light is right, the feeling of harvest is their but the heat is still in the 100's. Its hard to feel fall like when its like that. Plus the hot chics on the porch with autumn foliage in the background is always a nice touch...just sayin'. Great piece!
