I Am So Sorry Sometimes

I am so sorry sometimes

that I’ll never see Paris in the spring

that I never had a church wedding

or learned how to play the piano

that I can’t remember

Christmas mornings as a child

or what my father smelled like

that I never went fishing with my brother

on mornings when I could have slept in

that too many winters have long since past

since I’ve been home

that my sister and my parents

never had the privilege of growing old

that it’s been years since my last confession,

and I am so sorry sometimes.

But, humble you are, and that’s more valuable and honorable than sorrow .. or so I believe. A deeply reflective poem.

Humble, perhaps...but still sorry. Thank you, Robert. Your intuition caused me to smile!
This is so real and painful at the same time.

...thank you ever so kindly, Cassie.
I loved reading this, with its plaintive and moving sharing of those regrets that somehow seem stronger as time passes. Each missed experience struck a chord. But it IS only 'sometimes' that those blue moods overtake us. For what is past is past and we cannot change it. Ahead lies the future and lives to be lived.

As always, your writing uses words with economy and effect so that we share your thoughts and feelings with clarliy and power. Thank you for the pleasure you provide.

Regret can cripple some people. Sometimes the things we've done, or not done, are better left as dust in the past.
I really liked this. Good job.

this is Beautiful !!!--even in expressing regrets it does so in a soulful and moving manner. this whole poem is a confession- not to a Priest but to those whom you loved and to us. I know that all have forgiven you

one small suggestion - look at the when I could of slept in line. that kind of implies to me that you did not sleep in but I take it you did as fishing was so early.. maybe something like "just so I could sleep in"

You are most generous and kind. Thank you, Lily!
Hey, don't be "sorry." Be human. Be fallible. Don't regret the shoulda's, the woulda's, etc., LIVE. Time to go Paris, dear. Also, it is my understanding the have great piano teachers there, as well.

Is that a fact? Perhaps my bucket list will get shorter after all! ; )

I only know what I read in the papers! Ha! Not really. Sometimes I even "intuit" stuff, too!
life isn't easy Kelly, we all wish we'd done things differently but I believe being able to put thoughts into stories or poetry helps us keep those we loved alive and its always never to late to do the things we dream of. As always, beautiful words. Will

Kelly -
we all have regrets, many that we are truly sorry for. The thing is they are usually all behind us, there is little we can do about them. Though we may be sorry there is no sense in getting mired down with the feelings of guilt they can impose on us. Life goes on and so should we. Since we can't do anything about the past, we can perhaps at least learn from is.
Take care - Dave
