In A World Gone Mad

In A World Gone Mad

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

In a World Gone Mad

I am helpless

until my nails dry,

till that first cup of coffee

rushes like adrenaline

through my veins,

till the sales rack at Nordstrom’s

diminishes in size,

till Entenmann’s desserts

no longer satiate my tongue,

till I can strike a pose like Garbo

till I can quote the classics

of Shakespeare & Keats,

till menopause relinquishes

all rights of my body to me

till John Lennon’s  “Imagine”

no longer reverberates

in a world gone mad

in a world gone mad

in a world gone mad.

A fine piece of writing Kelly. I like the references to the places and things that have meaning for you. The day is truly not underway 'til that first cup of coffee is in hand.

A little thing, the abbreviation of until is 'til unless of course you're turning soil. :-p

I'm easy to please. A box of maltesers, a half decent glass of red and a good poetry book, preferably the English romantics, my absolute all time favourites.

The world can then go as mad as it likes. :))

The world has gone mad at an accelerating rate; the place is filled to the rafters with humans but no humanity.

Thank you for the great read.

Great piece writing!
wow Legs! you are gone deep in this one says i! stopped me old in the turn and closing ..John Lennon will forever haunt the world with his senseless death :( i read a poem about John Coltrane by Island Hippy and have been listening to his great work as i read poetry here at the Cafe .. your poem delivered a knock out punch to my reveries but as i am writing ..John's sax drifts over me and the mood is uplifted .. it is a mad world .. we get things so wrong so often and wonder why happiness eludes us .. very emotive read for me Kelly .. i like this side of you i have not seen ;) tho your hot Legs always are tasteful and classy this poem really struck me

...that's everything and more that I could have hoped for. Thank you, Dee!
It seems there is always something that takes priority over what should really matter. Written in such an engaging way. The poem spoke to me.

Thank you so much, Divya!
Oh, those Entenmann's... without them, this would indeed be a world gone mad. It's a fun write, with an undertone of resilience. Wonderfully written.
