What is lost to the wind

What is lost to the wind

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

What is lost to the wind

I cry

for what is lost

to the wind

for it can never return

from whence

it came

To me, the goal of a very short poem is to pack it with meaning, based on how a ton of possibilities are unleashed in the reader’s mind. Your poem is the poster child for doing just that. It’s not just words on the page, but ideas spawned by your words, which creates a much longer piece of consideration. A very creative way to say that we must keep going onward in life! *sigh!* There are no do-overs, I guess! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

dear Kelly... I am thinking of the song, "The answer my friend is blowing in the wind...... How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand?" Your poem is poignant to be sure. truly, Pat

Kelly, you rip out a heart with these words... nothing is ever returned from whence it came (at least not as it originally was) but I think it is when you are confronted with this reality that we fill oceans with our tears....

In the words of the great Ian Tyson

"Four strong winds that blow lonely, Seven seas that run high,
All these things that don't change, Come what may."

What we 'lose' or choose to give up seldom returns. We can cry for the loss or smile at the memory of what we had.

This brief poem says so much. A good write Kelly.

Thank you for the review and the quote, Ted. It certainly made me wonder!
Yes, a short and sweet poetic orgasm you created . . . a quick race to the peak, followed by a reflective, slow descent.
(was deep in the Four Corners area this past week. No computer, spotty cell reception, no internet. So, a late but sincere "thank you" for your entry into our world. We all are the better for it.

...a poetic orgasm! You've heard it here, folks...I love it! Many thanks, my friend!
I can relate - a very short and poignant piece to contemplate the might have been - perhaps next time, catch a ride on a passing leaf and see where destiny takes us - :-)

I'd love to catch a ride on a passing leaf! Thank you for a great perspective, Phil!
So deep and philosophical. You give us much to think about here Kelly. In your brief and poignant lines, you mourn for things that have passed and will not come again. Eloquent and beautifully balanced poem. But, what if time runs in a circle instead of a straight line? Will we see the past as the present in another life? Hmmmm. Great write!
