Pretzel Logic

Pretzel Logic

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers
"

...Steely Dan, Johnny Walker and Monopoly!

"

Pretzel Logic

He always won

at Monopoly

flicking ashes

from a filtered cigarette

collecting various railroads

and green houses

all in a zealous exchange
for red hotels.

I was the appointed banker

keeping my interest

on him

and Johnny Walker,

indulging my coquettish wiles

into the epoch of loquacious conversation

and the pretzel logic

of Steely Dan.

Love it.. seen from an innocent bystander watching the two of you bid and play, wait and wonder. You really do know how to write a scene beautifull, Kell, me darlin' fun and fascination all the way.. We ised to love it when us lot, seven of us, were young. but it was barred, banned and all by our parents come Christmas Day when we had to talk to each other and the like. Laughing now, of course. Your weave of words have given a new slant to the game with Pretzels acccompanied by boozy breaths and baited hope for one of the best to be yours, captured !

This had just the perfect amount of rose-tint, warm language, and cool-breezy distance
to hook me in for a few reads repeatedly. Awesome! Wouldn't change a thing- this leaves lasting images, Kelly. Can't go wrong with Steely Dan, Johnnie Walker, and Monopoly either!

'Hey Nineteen...that's 'Retha Franklin". Kinda sums it up.
Those long ago nights of smoky whisky, cigarettes and deep philosophical conversations are sorely missed. Sometimes we even played board games.
A good write Kelly.

...sometimes, we did! ; ) Thank you, Ted!
ohhh i like this one Legs...well done ...took me on a ride ..great closing says i ... well done ..Wikipedia says of Steely "...Blending elements of jazz, traditional pop, R&B, and sophisticated studio production with cryptic and ironic lyrics, .." your poem so well matches .."Rikki don't loose that number" alive even today ;) and your metaphor, monopoly instantly relatable ... Railroads and Boardwalk and Park Ave. wasn't it?!

Big moments in little poems are my favorite. I needed this tonight.

I loved it when Donald Fagan told the MTV music awards after Cousin Dupree, "Thank you but it really doesn't mean that much". Ha!

You brought back a lot of nostalgia with such few lines. I appreciate that on many levels.

Poets can be so dramatic! 😂.
Jk. Agreed. It's been too long.
You play games like my a*****e family used to play.

But we were more of a Credence Clearwater "cosmos factory" kind of family.

Did anyone else get the "pretzel logic" steely dan album reference? I'm too lazy to read the other comments.

You have good taste in music Kelly Scheppers.

love it! better to roll the dice and take a 'Chance' rather than a Community Chest. you may pass go and collect $200 for this one. not sure where this one will lead but you've got all the ingredients for a trip on the 'Boardwalk' or Park Place perhaps. listening to Steely Dan as I read. hoping that twisted logic wins 'the game'. very clever. playful, alluring write Kelly. this rates right up there with nude twister perhaps. is the bank giving loans at this time & what's the collateral? well done ... :)
