There are songs that move me to tears, and "Bookends" by Simon & Garfunkel, is one of them. I wanted to take a few lines and incorporate them into a poem that expresses love and the loss of it in our lives. This is what I came up with.

Kelly, I'll admit I'd never heard this song. I'm 49, and I haven't listed to much of their music. You certainly made the their lyrics richer with this poem (which I read before and after listening to the song).
It's a somber but touching reminder of how precious and fragile love is; yet, how we can keep pieces in our minds.

Children are invulnerable and adults immortal - at least that is what our minds' believe.
I DON'T miss my neighbors - too often. I ask after them and am the less lonely for it. And of course many of my neighbors never seemed to live very near - who'ld a thunk? - but I have at times deeply wished SOME - well, never mind.
' a Simon & Garfunkel tune ~~ about a time of innocence, ~~ a time of confidences.. '
You have a way of turning back layers and dripping words through wee chinks of feelings and somehow, enhance each and every one.
Brit that i am, need to go listen very carefully to certain lyrics and associate them with a period that means so much to so many Simon and Garfunkel seem to be two of the musical giants that strodem sang and strummed through a magical time..
Kelly, you've done it again.. and so brilliantly. Thank you for the lesson in how to.. speak words that smile and cry same time. x

Soft, tender and wonderful thoughts for love dear Kelly.
"I’ve preserved your memories,
sepia tones of lost afternoons."
I liked the above lines. Good places and faces are remembered when are enjoying the afternoon warm sun and the mind wandered off. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

Thank you, John. It's really an incredible song that leaves an indelible mark upon one's heart.
I am the same way, Kelly and your beautiful poem is a wonderful enhancement to the song. It is amazing how some songs can put us back to a certain place and time reliving all those thoughts and emotions that came with it.
Well written Kelly. Simon and Garfunkel...their music helped define an era...much like CCR seemed to write the score for the Vietnam War...so did Simon and Garfunkel songs underlie the protest era.
Songs that made you think...songs for poets.

It was indeed one of the best times of my life, and to this day, I am still feeling the influence of all I learned. Thank you so much, Ted!
OH MY....that song, that song! That entire album actually. I wore it out. The words, so similar to your poem....and so moving. I can not hear them or read them without tears forming. " Can you imagine us years from today. Sharing a park bench quietly. How terribly strange to be seventy." And yet, I am ever closer to that age. Thank you, my friend, for sharing this one. Lydi**
