Bookends

Bookends

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers
"

...first writing of a new year!

"

Bookends

We are immortal

like the sea,

like the tide

that rushes in

then out again

Its silence speaks

to my amaretto soul,

sequestering the words

to a Simon & Garfunkel tune

about a time of innocence,

a time of confidences.

I’ve preserved your memories,

sepia tones of lost afternoons.

They’re all that’s left you.

Author's Note

Kelly Scheppers
There are songs that move me to tears, and "Bookends" by Simon & Garfunkel, is one of them. I wanted to take a few lines and incorporate them into a poem that expresses love and the loss of it in our lives. This is what I came up with.

I am equally moved by the lyrics of this particular song & I also love to incorporate parts of songs I love into the poems I write. You have accomplished both artfully. I don't know if it's becuz I'm old now & lots of the people I know are also old . . . or if it's the pandemic . . . or ether taking over our interactions . . . but many seem to be feeling this void or fading or loss of love. People just don't seem to have the bandwidth or attention span to love like in the good old days (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

When I picked this poem to read it was because I love that S&G song! Well chosen.

I could listen to it over and over again, and still not get enough of the ambience of it. I find it .. read more
"Sepia tones of lost afternoons" is my favorite line in this piece.. which inherently implies the antiquity of faded memories..but ones which you are fond of. I also enjoy how the sepia reference applies to your talents as a photographer.

The beginning stanza truly grabbed me though... we are immortal like the sea...
It made me think of the permanency of souls joined together... even when apart, they are eternal and infinitely woven together and need only the tides of time to bring them in physical contact to crash together again.. to play together in the rush that is high tide... until they are spent and the lull of afterglow sends them in opposite directions (but always to be joined and always to return!) I so love that possibility!!

Thank you for the kindness your words bring me today!
Beautiful! Motion of the tide sets a wonderful rhythm to your poem, as your words express the joy of kept secrets and sadness of lost love. Beautiful!
