A Nod to Hollywood Noir

It was a quarter to two, perhaps three.

She'd been working overtime for days
trying to make ends meet,
when he walked in.

His name was Johnny.
Not to be confused with the other John's in her life...
Johnny Come Lately,
Johnny Walker,
or, Johnny B. Goode.

He was a cross between Gable and James Dean -
the actor, not the sausage.
Notorious for wearing black…and being quick.
( He could turn off a light and be in bed before the room got dark! )
The night he arrived at our heroine's bar,
he was suffering from a head trauma -
said he had fallen in love with the lady in red!
She offered him some sympathy
and a cold compress for his head,
which was a 12 oz. package of frozen peas.

The moral of my story is this -
A girl can never have too many John's in her life
or too many bags of frozen vegetables in her freezer.
Or, to paraphrase the words of a poet
( and that would be me )
let's just say,
“…she went to his head,

like a cold in the dead of winter.”

I've always liked those old black and white movies. The characters were interesting and the dialog was clean and clever. The guys always wore a suits and when they called someone it was always on a black rotary dial phone. :)

Nice one Kelly.

You are welcome Kelly.
(My dear departed mom was a HUGE Bacall fan, due in part that she always bragged that she and Bacall were the same height; 5'8. Ha!) Well hi-de-ho this punny poem is killer-diller! And I sees where ya comin' from, but I ain't been to no bar yet that has frozen peas (I prefer frozen corn, actually) but I swear for a dish like you , I'd let you cool me down with your peas, headache or what; no doubt they'd be just as sweet as you. Yeah, sweet like the sugar in your morning cup of joe. Now lemme give you the straight dope, I might not know bupkis about rhyming, but I do believe Kelly rhymes with "awesome." Say it out loud and tell me it ain't so. Anywho, gotta take a powder, there's a beer with my name on it! (Literally)
