Kiss the Girls
A Poem by Kelly Scheppers
...a reflection of war
Kiss the Girls
He was calling from
Afghanistan,
his second tour of
duty.
They spoke in a universal shorthand
mostly about the house,
how much the oldest had his chin
and how the twins were beginning to crawl.
The last words she recalls from him
was ''I’m alright…”
“…kiss the girls”.

Soft tears of empathy well-up from the sheer sweet sadness emanating from your skillfully selected and placed words and the forlorn and lonely picture, Kelly … you touched my heart, and almost broke it with your final line.
If you've a mind to, there is a wee one on my pages about war you might find touching, too.

The news stations here always film them leaving, with their families at hand...but the joy comes in their return to port! My brother used to be one of those men, and even in the best of circumstances, it is most difficult to leave. Thank you, Rudi!
