It was the forties -
the big band era of swing.

The lean years
of jitterbug and zoot suits,
of pin up girls and jukeboxes.
When Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman
were president
and World War II had come to an end.

It was

Citizen Kane and Casablanca.
When a broad was a woman
and a woman was broad shouldered
and fur clad.
When black and white was in vogue,
and Mildred Pierce was a mystery
told in flashbacks…

and Joan Crawford
was the Mommy dearest

of them all.

I googled the years in which my parents grew up as teenagers...this is what I came up with!

love this time piece ... my parents flavored my life with all these and more ...after the War it was baby boomer time as well as an incredible economy and advances in so many fields .. when unions had real purpose and far less greed ... and a "broad" was a very good thing ...no hidden lack of "correctness" ... glad i found this one my friend ..your poem has lifted my heart and soul remembering a very good time that spilled over into the early 60's ... when that generation began its loosing of footholds ..

The imagery of this virtually takes me to that time of vogue, art deco, the lindy hop, the Charleston, The Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey Band , Duke Ellington, The Pointer Sisters, etc; what a glorious time to be alive, the era of real movie-making … you've captured it all, and simply by Googling.

I would have loved to have been born in that era! I've always pictured myself sitting atop a Steinway piano with a full piece orchestra behind me, belting out some ole classic in a slinky form fitting gown, staring out into a sea of rounded tables and cigarette smoke. I look back at the era that my grand parents grew up in.
Seeing the progress of the automobile from tin lizzy to today's super cars.
From a crude radio to flat screen surround sound movie theater televisions.
From dorky looking swim suits to bikini babes, Playmates and Victoria's secret.
The human progression of the last century fascinates me.
And so do the bikini babes.

I grew up listening to the Big Band sounds that my parents loved so much. Whenever I hear that music, I travel right back to my childhood, watching my parents dance around our living room to the sounds of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. Reading your poem just now flashed me right back there again. Thank you.
