Love and Other Drugs

Love and Other Drugs

A Poem by Mariah

Why is it that the truth reveals itself after the fact?
Once the dust settles
And the wheel of life turns once again
I begin to see for the first time
Distant memories resurface
Memories overflowing with indescribable beauty
The beauty of love
Love creeps slowly upon us
Seizing us when we least expect it
And yet in the blink of an eye
It vanishes
But the emotion behind it persists
Causing the mind to reel
Trying to piece together how something can fall apart
As easily as it was put together
And the heart is in a daze, struggling to accept this new reality
Try as it may to follow the footsteps of the mind,
It can’t displace this sentiment so easily-
The connection of one soul to another
The simplicity of life when peering into someone’s eyes
Oh, speak to me wise men
Tell me your secrets
It seems such a curse to love so deeply
How can the heart withstand this sorrow?
Such irony
Describing an irrational emotion with rational words
Is that why we are left speechless by love?
Because no word compares
What a beautiful mystery
Love can only be felt
Nothing more, nothing less
We are at the whims of love
May we go with enthusiasm
