ForwardA Chapter by Kikai

The year was 2030: America was back on top again. The cost of gas was down, the number of high school and college graduates were up. Less of the homeless had clogged the streets and more retail stores had taken their place. A bustling country, as was the rest of the world, but little did they know what was in store for them next. It was a clear, sunny day on August 23, 2030. Children still in their swimming pools, the air-conditioned mall jam-packed with subjects raging around as if it were a highway, and the neighborhood dog nestled itself in the shade of the park trees. All was as it should have been, correct? But it was at that moment, precisely 2:43 in the afternoon, that the first bomb had struck. It covered acre across acre, mile over mile, wiping out much of southeastern Canada and our crown jewel's very own New York City. It didn't take long before bunkers had begun to take formation underground, but it took several more months (with thousands of more fatalities) before all that could in the world was able to make it safely to their sanctioned hideaway. Many believed they'd be out in a few weeks, but those weeks soon turned to months, and months into more months, and into years...soon, whole new cities and whole new towns had taken shape in the underground pit. No one deemed the world above safe ever again, and no one had ever believed they would see the light of day as long as time still stood. Finally, nearly nine decades later, a collaborative team of politicians and scientists (who had been studying and keenly observing the above world for some time) announced that life as they had known it could possibly become reality once again. Though for 'safety precautions', they said, each family member would have to send 2 of their children to 'scout out' the place first. "Only for a week," they told us, "and if our team sees that life can still be sustainable, with the help of your children's actions and outcomes of course, then our fashion underground will cease to exist." However, 'lab rats' rather than 'scouts' would be the term I'd use instead, seeing it sounds more legitimate in this situation. But then again, whom I to say? Ah, I digress. So thus begins my journey to the new world above. A world I had only seen on video, in pictures, and by text. But in all honesty, how much could have really changed in only 90 years?
