Shadow with many shades.

Shadow with many shades.

A Poem by Mrudula Rani

Most of us are comfortable in our own skin,
Like living in a well-worn favorite cardigan.
Yet, the others' perception of us aren't always keen,
led by one's charms or lack of It, world holds a reflection
that is sometimes in distortion.

The sound of a voice etches a sketch
of the speaker in the minds of listeners,
a persona in decibels.
Features are filled by the tones of the timber.
Its no clone to the real one,
not even close to a copy of the carbon.

Written words of an author's draw an image
In the mind of reader that's a mirage.
Writings are projection of writer's reflections,
But the reader perceives it as writer's portrait in composition
Until the reader meets the author in person...
what a confusion!

Actions of a person fasten a character
to the deeds, representing a heart
In colored lights of love or hate.

Manufactured images of a mind manifests an unknown,
by obsorbing syllables and sound of vocals, it is only a shadow...
with many shades!

Can we ever really know a writer's intent when we read their words? Can we ever feel we know someone by their words alone? All valid questions to ask, and probably you would get many varied responses. I have met a couple of poets that I had known through a poetry website I frequented for years. It was marvellous meeting them in the flesh so to speak, but they were nothing like the perception I had of them from their writing. They exceeded all my expectations. I enjoyed this read M, it is thought provoking.

It is human nature I suppose to speculate about the author of articles. And we do get a glimpse of.. read more
there are some deep reflective thoughts in this one Rani ... both writer and reader can and do miss-perceive ..no doubt about it ...reading and seeking to glean a writer's intent is one of my favorite things about reading poetry ....even the most enigmatic words give insights into the intent of the writer i think ...but being both straight forward in presenting and truly open to differences in others can be accomplished ... is accomplished ;) had to read it a couple times ... it's flow is a little rough to me ... kind of like reading the thoughts one jots down in a diary ... but the message and depth override all that for me ... i like it :)
