Most of us are comfortable in our own skin,
Like living in a well-worn favorite cardigan.
Yet, the others' perception of us aren't always keen,
led by one's charms or lack of It, world holds a reflection
that is sometimes in distortion.
The sound of a voice etches a sketch
of the speaker in the minds of listeners,
a persona in decibels.
Features are filled by the tones of the timber.
Its no clone to the real one,
not even close to a copy of the carbon.
Written words of an author's draw an image
In the mind of reader that's a mirage.
Writings are projection of writer's reflections,
But the reader perceives it as writer's portrait in composition
Until the reader meets the author in person...
what a confusion!
Actions of a person fasten a character
to the deeds, representing a heart
In colored lights of love or hate.
Manufactured images of a mind manifests an unknown,
by obsorbing syllables and sound of vocals, it is only a shadow...
with many shades!
What an intriguing, complicated subject. To some we are wise. To others, a fool. Are we saint or sinner? Are we as we see ourselves? Your well-thought poem views many angles.

Thank you, Samuel. For your wonderful thoughts. I appreciate them.
I loved the title and actually it pulled me towards this poem..I agree that we actually can't have a complete portrait of someone with his works but at least we can get some idea about that person because what you think gets reflected in your actions..Loved the way you wrote and you expressed your ideas..Keep on writing dear..

I wonder if every time someone posts a piece of his or her fact or faction, a brief peep of the person is added to make it seem more alluring or interesting or, perhaps, mysterious. Writers write to display ability perhaps, not to dress a persona and make it seem more than it is. Perhaps. Like actors, writers portray characteristics that could be as far away as heaven is to hell.. what is read or heard is performance, no more or less. Maybe. You've invited comments by posting your 'Shadow with.. ' you have created surely what you invite your readers to explore and in all probability isn't an introduction to your innermost mind and heart ' Manufactured images of mind manifests an unknown...' indeed.

Your kind heart and your lovely nature always comes through your words, dear friend.
To a certain extent, we can get a glimpse or small window of perception about a person's mind, habit, likes and dislikes, gentle or evil spirit, mild or hard manners and so forth. Patterns are also good ways to observe and fathom. We can't be hundred percent sure but I would say about over half. For example, reading Gibran Khalil Gibran can give us a clear picture or snapshot of his spirituality, morality, logic, level of wisdom, artistic likes and dislikes(like almost nude portraits celebrating the body...) and his longing to back to his country as in ( The Prophet...) and so forth.
An excellent write, dear poet.

I'm sure if we were able to meet in person everyone we read on this site, our perceptions of what we think they are would be much different than what they actually are. The same would hold true for artists, musicians, sports stars....What we see, or hear, or read, isn't always the true essence of the person. Sometimes they're better or worse in person.

It is impossible to perceive true essence of some one from their work ..... but Some writers stand out with their wonderful work and automatically developing an affection admiration for them we can't avoid.... glimpses of their character that shines through their work is what makes them dear to the genuine fan.
Profoundly insightful.
A unique perspective on a rather common phenomenon.
Perhaps, we sometimes discern the fuzzy outlines of what the author would like to be.
Exceptional work, M!

I love the way you paint a number of word portraits to show the way an audience confuses the artist with the art – whether it’s acting, speaking, drawing, writing, etc. When I first started on this website, I made the mistake of thinking each written piece reflected something about the writer. Your message could be carried a step further for heroes . . . sports or media heroes are seen as being their famous façade, but not really being known for their true hearts off the field or screen. This is such an important distinction you make in your poem, sweet friend (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

With all the woe is me and misery written about half the writers here must sleep on a cliffs edge with a noose round their necks. Many seem to restrict themselves to just one theme when there are thousand after thousand to write about.
Like this Mrudula, and your team are on a collision course with the improving England.
Could be a good game.
Hope you are well

Someone once told me that if you write in black and white. People will read you in black and white.
But if you write in colour. It will capture the imagination of the reader. Hence, why I write in crayon.
