Heart and Mind

Heart and Mind

A Poem by Mrudula Rani

Falling in love isn't for the frail hearts;
for love doesn't concern itself
with the strength of an organ
that's no more than the size of a fist.
Love rocks the mind like a raft
on high seas on a stormy night,
With no guiding light.

When mind and heart decide upon
a mate for their soul,
there is no stopping them
from reaching their goal.
They fail to foresee the risks of the deal.
For the magic of love makes them dizzy
With the romantic zeal.

Heart and mind pay no heed
to the whims and unfair games love plays,
They jump into stream of love
with hook, line and sinker
With their heads first.
Soon they know that no defence
can survive the onslaught of dribble.

Love makes the rules,
that change with every scenario.
Not knowing the direction love is leading,
heart and mind swim in circles of confusion,
the desires and demands of love leave them pale.
the rigors of passion plays a hard ball with soul.
Tackling the longing and the absence
of a lover, Is a sea-saw that tears
emotions into ribbons, and cast them to wind.

Heart and mind make an effort
to gather hope and despair,
through the haze of rainbows and sunsets,
and warm thoughts of lover's breast
that drives the mind insane,
heart keeps the beat per minute
to love's tune like a metronome.
Mind utters the lover's name
like a mantra to sustain the soul,
all through the long spells of desire and hope.
The longing arms feel empty and tremble
And the eyes have the worst of the tasks,
the endless search for that familiar form...
Like hunting for Nessie
In every puddle and pool.

There's never any relief in lover's silence,
not knowing the other cared or not,
is like being in a desert
that holds the mirage of the loved one
on every sand dune.
Some times the heart wants no part of the other,
while the mind can't go on a second
Without the lover
and wants it come over.

Often they pray and wish
that they had never met the suitor,
Then regret and offer prayers
of thanks to the Lord
for the probable soulmate.
Being in love leaves the soul sick and ecstatic
at the same minute.
The struggles of love sick soul
are made worst,
by its house of passion and
seat of thought!

those feelings are mutual dear. I am overjoyed to know you. Thank you.
A truly wonderful account of the state of being in love and the havoc it can play. You kept me gripped from start to finish. No soppy love story here, it is an intense read. I congratulate you on a first rate poem. Love can indeed leave the soul sick. Sick at heart. Love is not for the faint hearted.

All good wishes

You are more than welcome.
Thank you for writing one of the best love poems I’ve ever read on this website in the last 2 years! I get so tired of patsy love poems that say nothing outside the dots, nothing close to reality. This is one of the best poems of yours that I’ve read so far. The thing that really stands out to me is how you can sustain this level of synchronicity & sparkling examples for such a long poem! Many times things tend to fade, but the intensity of your message goes on & on! I love the beginning, about the heart, stated with such a wry stinging mirth! It’s like you’re laughing at all the superficial love messages & saying: THIS is what it’s really all about! You use a ton of excellent metaphors! This roller coaster effect is the reason I’ve never had the courage or the blessing to know such a love. I’ve always been one foot out the door & never ready to face all that must be faced, as you’ve so astutely pointed out. This is stark reality stated in so many fanciful ways – truly brilliant word crafting & meaning . . . HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! Oh yeah! Awesome catch, for the photo! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Thank you KC, I treasure your comments .
Your poem starts off strong like a race horse right out of the gate and continues on at break neck speed to the end. Reading it felt like running a gauntlet with each stanza. It's a very strong and creative work. CD

What a handsome review. Thank you .
Wow my friend, what can I say...It would seem here encapsulated within your 'Heart & Mind' poem, you have successfully captured pretty much the whole range of exaggerated constraining and compelling emotions, perceptions and ideals associated with that most extreme driver that which we call love...Powerful and true my dear Friend and Poet.... ' Love makes the rules, ~ that change with every scenario. ~ Not knowing the direction love is leading,

What a poem, what an upping and downing of emotions that are part logical, part deeply emotional and .. made/make this reader pause, gasp. 'The longing arms feel empty and tremble ~ And the eyes have the worst of the tasks, ~ the endless search.. .. '

Opening this post was instantly. ' oops rather long ' .. but oh my, how wonderful the honesty and sincerity of your stanzas, your s eeming defence of what real love is.. what it can mean, certainly in your mind. And throughout. You've spoken on be half of all love's facets.. the joy and pain and more.. far more. Such wonderful work, Mrudula..

Love will take you up, and you'll never want to come down.
It's the ride we all want to be on.
But when love ends, wow, the world is coming to an end.
But would you have it any other way?
