Laundry Day

Laundry Day

A Story by Shelley Holt-Lowrey

FOUND 'ER!!
He found her.
His smile was filled with understanding.
A beautiful white toothed smile.
Understood.
She was just hiding...
     behind the box...
the one the new washing machine came in.
So much hustle.
Too much bustle.
Retreat
to something resembling
  Normal
  Safe
Hidden under the warmth of freshly laundered denim.
Ollie Ollie Oxen Free-eeeee!

Too true. But while they are little they sure burst the heart seams.
Delicious! A kitten, a dog? (reread....) No, most likely a small child! Under the spreading denim tree, she, a silent squeal of delight... that smile, that spread from ear to ear, house to sea. So simple but with the vigor of images from a childhood shared by oh so, so many. These are the kinds of memories we love to imagine when we are feeling down, feeling that tinge of melancholy. Perhaps they carry extra credit when weighed against more somber works upon a readership's unerring scales? I should like to think so.
