In certain circles you will find
That some are cruel and others kind
People are fickle, some shallow, some deep
Some of them not worth the space that they keep
Others are loving and giving of care
Some, I wonder, are wasting the air
How do they do it? How do they sleep?
And what of the kind of company they keep?
I need some substance, someone who'll care
Someone that's worthy of sharing my air
Put down your egos, set them aside
Anyone knows that's a dumb place to hide
Open your hearts and dig something deep
Now THATS the kind of company that I'd like to keep
This is really good. I also am very careful of the company that I keep. Whether we like to believe it or not, the people we surround ourselves with have an impact on our behavior, and we have a responsibility to be good people for this world. When I am around shallow, boring, or cruel people, or those who are simply not goal focused, I tend to start acting that way also. I like how you expressed this need to be around people of substance

I often have a difficulty making friends due to how I'd want their type of company to be around me. I can't be around those who are too whiny or complaining, thinking they're the best or right all the time. I can't stand super uptight people, but I've learned to understand why they are that way. I have a very small circle of friends & mostly keep to myself, but in all, I'm able to get along with anyone if I meet them. But I look for a committed conversation, you know? Like, I can't say what I have to say and have the other person just respond in a word or just a sentence. It kills the vibe completely...they have to be able to keep a conversation going and seem interesting...keep ,e interested, teach me something I don't know, make me laugh. Anything that'll keep me engaged with meeting them. I'm not one for one-sided conversations, they die too quickly cause I normally have too much to say...or they just don't like that I happen to ask too many questions. I like to ask questions, get to know them, you know? We all have different priorities for the type of company we keep and I enjoyed how this poem came out. Great job! I always love reading your work.

If we were all to put down our egos and look truly at ourselves, then I think the only thing we would realise, is that we are only different because our thoughts are in our heads and not in others. If we could all see how fallible we are, then we might actually begin to truly hear what people have to say, rather than labelling everyone without giving them the time to prove or disprove us.
We can but wish my friend. Excellent write.

I was on the site once before a while back but I hit one of those bumps in the road that knocks you harder then the average pot hole. So I'm back and have very fond memories of this writing community... more..
