My Monster

My Monster

A Poem by Mr. Lopez

With a kiss and an embrace
She held me fixed within her gaze
Evil is attracted to the color
Of the light
Maybe that's why I feel blind when I'm
Within her sight
All my strength and my ambition
Recognition's not my health condition
She would knock and I would
Let her in
That's when all the trouble
Would begin
The dreams that I kept would
Leave my eyes
The stars that I loved fell
From the sky's
The grass is green, the water's wet
She taught me things I won't soon forget
I know now where the wild tide goes
I now know how the wild vine grows
You see, I'm a victim of my very own
Mass delusion
I'm a product of my very own
Mass confusion
The farther I fell the closer she came
It's not her fault only I'm to blame
Even so I could not make sense
Of it all
No longer trapped within her bottle
She is my monster
Alcohol

How powerful!!! I was convinced you spoke of a woman. The parallels you made are remarkable and brought me fresh perception on addiction.

"The farther I fell the closer she came" When I'm drowning in life, I will hold on to anything that makes promises of better times, only to find out (too late) that I'm still sinking and too weak to stay afloat. Definitely a beautiful monster with dangerous charms.

Often times we are seduced by our addictions like the eyes of a beautiful woman from across the room. Regardless of your poison ,We'll spend each waking hour visiting and revisiting thoughts of it (her) she steals our ambitions and our dreams fade away. Honestly, I am not an alcoholic but I turned to alcohol on THE darkest day of my life and there isn't a problem in the world bad enough that alcohol can't make worse. Even so , the experience made me that much wiser although the price for that knowledge was very high. I've known a lot of addicts and alcoholics over the years and I've seen them consumed by their addictions and although I myself am not an addict or an alcoholic , I was not immuned to her charms. It scared the living s**t out of me and on that day she became my monster. Thank you Nemo for reading and understanding.

All the while I was reading this, I thought it was a woman, right up until that last powerful line. We all have our demons, some strangle more than others. Nicely captured my friend.
