Humble Pie

Humble Pie

A Poem by Mr. Lopez

I sold my pride at a yard sale for fifty cents
Along with some other old stuff
There once was a time that I used it a lot
But I guess that I'd just had enough

So I took what I'd earned and went to the store
To buy ingredients to make humble pie
I was relieved because after I'd eaten it all
I could finally look myself in the eye

I know that this won't right all the wrongs in the world
But it does help me get through the day
After all when everything is said and done
"I'm sorry" is all I can say

This is very clever & creative! It's the poster child for "show-don't tell" becuz your entire poem smacks of self-deprecation. I love these parts especially: "I sold my pride for fifty cents" . . . "to buy ingredients for humble pie" . . . and the last line is very powerful for a poem that seems mostly playful. We do owe apologies for all the damage our egos & our pride usually have caused over the years, before we learn to grow up (usually much too late in life) & do what your poem describes! *smile*

I like this poem! I don't really like humble pie, but the aftertaste is delightful and it helps me sleep.

Super tight! Some much to like about this, the message is so relatable and you've expressed it well! Simple elegance with no lack of meaning! I enjoyed this very much. Ray xo
