The Roadmap of Life

The Roadmap of Life

A Story by Mr. Malarkey
"

It's been a long week, and the first one with major changes in effect. Taking the time to reflect through a little inner monologue.

"
Hello, it's your past.

26 years of the s**t. The lessons learnt, the joys and sufferings of youth, the fears and influences taken hold. Do you remember the time when you once believed you could be whatever you wanted to? That anything was possible and life was a wild adventure? How about when you were considered an outcast, cast aside from the evolution of social growth? Hardly any friends throughout school. That had to hurt like a b***h huh? Then graduation and the release of all your worries through the adoption of an extreme but simple belief: The less you care about something, the less it hurts you. Got you past the pain, but was it actually worth it? Then college. Overcame the obstacles in your path and found new friendships through online communities. But look at where you are now? Cast out once more by those you considered your friends, and back to where it all began. I guess you didn't really change much after all huh? You usually see me as a bunch of doom and gloom, but there's some good in me. Memories of family, the good and fleeting times during those brief moments when people did care, and the loves that came and went over my time. I am your lessons and experiences.

Hello, it's your present.

I noticed you decided to take command of yourself at last. Decided to make some needed changes, yeah? How strong is your will to defy fate? How far are you willing to go to really live in this moment and take back your life for what it could be? You've done well so far! Found a counselor, revisited an old hobby of writing, and leapt back into the dating pool. Living in this moment feels pretty good. It's tense, full of doubts that are constantly being overcome, and the satisfaction of making it to the other side of the fence. As long as you focus on me, you will know where you stand. Look at your roadmap to life. The dot is where we are. Always in the moment of making a decision. I am you, and you live for me.

Hello, it's your future.

I'm still a while ahead of you, and I'm wacky as ever. I never really know what I'm gonna be, because I'm changing all the time. Didn't work something out in your present? Guess I'll be something else then haha. It's okay though, for the most part you'll know what I'll be by the time I get there. That is, of course, assuming the unexpected never happens and your life stays on its predictable little path. I know you'd like me to be a certain way, such as a future of success or a future with four kids. It doesn't matter to me, because your actions decide what I will become. So what will it be then? Will you take action and change what I am predicted to be? Or will you keep thinking about what I could be, remain idle, and in effect stay on your current course of life and leave me to be what was predicted? If you want to change what I am, take the leap and act. I am your goals and aspirations realized.

Hello, it's your present again.

Are you happy with your life right now? Take action now if you aren't, regardless of your experiences or aspirations. Your life is what you make it to be.
