Alone

Alone

A Poem by JR Darewood

I walk alone to the beat of my heart
while the rest of you dance
sweaty, hips grinding to a rhythm i cannot hear
  watching me like ghosts
  phantasms of faces
  ethereal and formless
  like zephyrs in the rain
I don't feel the drops
  don't feel your gaze
  don't hear your voice...
because that dull ache eclipses it all
  leaden in my heart
    it hurts.
But the only moment that i am me,
is when you all disappear.

Somber, sad, and relatable. Makes me think of my own depressive days. Great job!

Wow this smacks you in the face and flips you over...felt it's chill, and I so get it....

Great work on this one, J. The last two lines are particularly resonant- a perfect end to a very good poem. Nicely done!

like zephyrs in the rain

LOVE that line

sometimes we need to be alone

even if momentarily

"to feel that moment of clarity"

Nice poem. I like that you are highlighting the conflict between your social identity and your personal identity. And then you say "the moment you all disappear I am me." Why do you think the personal identity is more authentic? Is it due to the lack of social constraints that are imposed by the public?

Yeah, I can feel this one on most nights. I have a love-hate relationship with being alone, but a mostly hate relationship with being in a crowd.
