Superhero

Superhero

A Poem by Mr. Lopez

While sitting at the bus stop

A man asked

“What is it that you do?”

I said to him

“I would tell you but you won’t believe it’s true.”

He said

“I’ll decide what I do or don’t believe.”

I knew that once I told him he would laugh at me

 And leave.

I said “I am a retired superhero.

I’ve hung up my cape and tights.”

“No longer do I use my super powers

Day and night.”

He said “Well….do you miss it?”

I said “No, my job is done. Besides, there are others

Just like me. I’m not the only one.”

I don’t have the desire to flaunt my God given gift.

The power that I used to use when a battle would persist

“The others know just what to do,

There’s no need for my instruction.”

“And me? I have no use for my

 Amazing powers of self destruction.”

Author's Note

Mr. Lopez
It amazes me how , even in light of so much potential , we as humans can be so self destructive. But we can choose to use our "amazing powers" of kindness to enlighten the lives of those around us. Your comments and reviews are much appriciated.

I had to read this poem twice to get the full effect. If kindness was freely given by humans, I am sure there would be so many more lives that haven't been shattered.

I enjoyed this poem, though it is not one of my favorites that you have wrote.

There is a deep meaning behind the words on this page, my interpretation isn't very clear.

You had me from the start, as you always do with your writing, and I was so curious as to where you were going with it. Super heroes and powers? New subject matter! But when I got to the end, it was an unexpected twist with the self-destruction. I am not sure, sitting here alone and engrossed in a poem, but I think I let out a quiet "oh!" at the end!

Kindness, compassion, and honesty are the truest super powers we as men and women have. We don't need to hid behind capes or masks to do good, nor do we need to boast about the powers that we can control so much with.

A great write, I'm in total agreement with you.

The poem was smooth and the ending twist, made it clear as to why the old man had hung up his cape.

Thanks for sharing!

Very thought provoking ML. I love the conversational style you used for this piece.

In regards to your author's note, I am in complete agreement that it is a blessing to be able to enlighten the lives of those around us. Encouragement and exhortation goes a long ways in a world that is dark and dreary. And it takes every single one of us to make it happen. Unity is key. It won't happen a part from that. Every single one of us are important in this world in which we live; a vital piece of the puzzle.

I really like what Dani had to say below:

I think because our ability to heal...
that God given power we all have...
is loaned
to us, but is HIS.
Not ours...
We are merely .... the messengers. :)

The BONAFIDE Truth right there. It would be dangerous to EVER claim His healing or delivering power as our own and it would certainly be to our own demise.

We cannot and will not be able to help another until we first have received the help and healing that we need. We can't give what we do not have ourselves...Each of us must look inward and let the Lord deal with our own hearts, purging the impurities that cloud our perception and ability to see the truth.

Personally, I must do this often. There are no perfect Christians this side of eternity. If we think we are without sin, we deceive ourselves. Each of us have blind spots, but if we are willing and teachable, those that love us and celebrate our lives and have our best interests in mind-those that we trust-can bring those things to our attention so we can correct them.

Likewise, each one of us needs to practice what we preach. (And NO ONE knows it all-No one, but God Himself.) Sometimes the ones doing the most finger pointing are the ones with the greatest issues. There are three fingers pointing back at them. That judgment comes right back on the one that is walking in judgment.

I don't know... I sense there to be a tad bit of judgment here within this piece. If I am wrong, I will stand corrected, but... Not sure who it is directed towards...but I sense that. You obviously see someone who you feel is self destructing. Definitely pray for them. God is all about redemption. He cares. And He is the only one that can call a person to "Hang up their cape."

God Bless ML! Have a wonderful evening! Carole

What's amazing is the way you were able to
create this wonderful piece to express that
thought..... excellent!

My daughter came into my room the other day for advice...
She said..."Mom, you are the only person I know that I am certain,
when I walk out of this room, I will feel better. So, why then,
if you obviously have so many answers....
do you not use them for yourself"..

In other words.. practice what I preach!
She sees my misery,
and sees that I know how to emerge,
and don't.

Why does it work like that?
I think because our ability to heal...
that God given power we all have...
is loaned
to us, but is HIS.
Not ours...
We are merely .... the messengers. :)
So, unless we too listen and heed...
We will remain ill.

Anyone can distribute the medicine...
but actually taking it is an entirely different thing.

YOU are awesome. I love your work ML.
Truly my friend...
