It was in the land of enchantment where the apple trees grew. On the green vines also grew the fruit that would feed many. A place where dreams become a reality. Where rivers of honey and wine flowed freely. He spent a lifetime of effort to bring prosperity to the families of his land. For all a fair share of the spoils to be distributed evenly. A place where fear was a wives tale. A distant memory but no more.
When he opened his kingdom ,like his arms, for all who would come. He also opened the doors for evil harpies to walk among the privileged.
Blinded by his desire for true love he sought companionship and a queen. One worthy of the crown, who would stand at his side. She would need to be trusted and compassionate.Beautiful yet humble, with a heart unmatched by all. But many a so called true love proved themselves unworthy of such love. Until from the farthest of lands came a beauty of kindness. She possessed all the qualities of one worthy. She moved like a breeze. Heartfelt and pure. She brought offerings to the king that would blind him with visions of peace and rest. Alas he could sit comfortably, knowing that his heart, like his kingdom, was complete and safe. In her eyes he saw honesty as pure as gold. In his heart he felt warmth once thought a fantasy. In his chamber she gave gifts for his eyes only. And the king, he did eat of the fruits of life. Like the grapes of the vine his love grew with the seasons of their lives.
Unbeknown to him, his queen spoiled on the vine. Once trustworthy and promising she brought storms to his kingdom of plenty. Not baring the fruit of his loins. Not satisfied with his all, she instead wanted more. She took lovers and gold and her heart no longer pure. To his people he showed no weakness of heart. To her he showed desperation for her love.
On a cold night in the early winter of a once warm loving chamber, he asked her to voice her passion . Did her fire still burn for him? With false lips of treachery she lied to keep her king off balance yet close. Taking much care to not expose her true purpose. To destroy the one that loved her more then ever a woman he loved. Giving her his back he asked her once more. At the window overlooking his kingdom he stood , awaiting the answer from her that would make him complete. An echo of his love for her he would forever more wait. For as he stood there admiring his creation, behind him she crept. With dagger clutched in hand and touched to poison for effect. She came to him smiling , with dreams of a future she thought owed her. It wasn’t until the blade hit bone that he realized her deceit. Her turned to face her with the tears of betrayal fell from cheek. She too had tears but were they tears of pain or joy? As he fell from the window plummeting to the kingdom below he knew only confusion and dispair. It would not be the fall nor the dagger that ended his days but his broken heart. With the king died his love and compassion for the people that he worked so hard to build. And for the queen who cried assassin his kingdom was now hers.
