The Power of Forgiveness

When I was a young man, I was hurt by my closest and most valued friend.  He sought my forgiveness but was met with resentment that was fueled by bitterness, anger, and close mindedness. Little did I know that my unforgiveness would trigger a chain of events that would grow and grow in me like a cancer and would affect the lives of every person whose lives I would touch there after .The destructive power of unforgiveness would render my life a living hell even when I thought that I had my life and emotions in complete control.  The manifestation of destructive feelings would creep in and out of my life at will.  Eventually my unforgiveness began to harden my heart. The obvious affects of its destructive power was met with blind eyes.  Over and over again I would experience bad events in my life, not knowing why this big black cloud continued to follow me. The people in my life were directly affected by this and for this I am so very sorry. From the friend who initially hurt me to friends and family to date who were hurt by my unwillingness to forgive, the destruction continued. I was tearing myself apart without even knowing it! So powerful was this affect that I finally went to the one source in the universe that could set me free. GOD!  He had been there the whole time, waiting for me. Watching and waiting for me until with open arms and heavy heart I cried to him to help free me from this prison that I had built of my own accord.  He then bestowed upon me the gift of forgiveness. So, I wrote a letter to my old friend, asking for his forgiveness for my lack of consideration for him by my unforgiving heart. How he must have hurt for so long when I turned my back on him. If you are reading this, I am so very sorry for all of the years of pain that I must have put you through.  Can you ever forgive me? To those of you who are reading this and have yourselves been hurt by someone that you love, please Look into your hearts. Remember why you loved them .Know that they too are hurting. Help them to heal. Look to God to grant you the grace and strength to give forgiveness to them and he will in turn forgive you when you most need him. For those of you who were hurt along the way by my bruised and calloused heart, I ask now for your forgiveness. Can you ever forgive me? I am so very sorry.

You have hit upon a subject that is, in one word, POWERFUL. I have a prayer ministry and I have found it to be one of the two biggest things individuals struggle with. Unforgiveness, bitterness, and resentment brings with it intense bondage and holds it's subjects in a vice grip of misery until they choose to forgive. There's so much to it, and it isn't always easy to work people through it, but I know even in my own life, I have witnessed the power of both ends. I am thankful for a God that wants to help us release those that have harmed us for OUR own good! God Bless & Keep up the good work!

Quite a similiar write as to my poem; you were right.
The idea of cancer is a nice comparision and I can completely relate to what you're saying here, as can most who've read this.
Very powerful emotions conveyed. Powerful poem.

Thanks for sharing!

I can tell that you had an inner conviction about not forgiving. To carry negative emotions inside, fuels the heart with animosity that grows. I know that I have had a hard time letting negative out of me, and praying for the other person rather than holding grudge. I can forgive but I never forget. Forgetting is just impossible. I know how you feel when you say the unforgiveness affects your family, etc. Many times it is hard to get close to a person who is walking around with negative energy. I remember - being angry at myself for this.

I admire your strength in making amends. A man with a soft heart, and not scared to show his true colors. Your words ring with empathy in the closure. Not only did you help yourself in making amends, you also reach out to help others.

a very poignant story of the power of forgiveness and the person who experienced the unforgiving nature of himself. once he found the power of forgiveness, everything changed forever. the realization that he had been wrong and had hurt many in his life, he made amends with himself and with those he loved.

i hope you accomplished reaching everyone that you hurt and that they all forgave you as well.

good work.

Thanks,
