The Fear

The Fear

A Poem by Mozart's Lullaby
"

The fear is strong, but does she need to fear?

"
The Fear

Stay away from me.
I don't want you close.
I can't think about what you could do to me.
I am strong.
I am weak.
I can focus.
I can't focus.

The fear is overpowering.
My heart beats too quickly.
The alley is dark.
No lights are on.
It's just me and them.
I have on chance to survive.

I must make it to the end.
But the fear...
It rules me.

I slow my steps, saving my energy.
Better to run with.
I take a deep breath.
Better to scream with.
I take my mittens off.
Better to hit with.

They are three feet away now.
I keep walking.
They are beside me.
I keep walking.
I am almost at the end of the alley.

Then, I hear footsteps.
"Miss? I think you dropped this."
I turn around quickly.
A black face is in the darkness.
He holds out a mitten.
My mitten.

I am shocked.
I reach out and gently accept the mitten.
Our hands briefly touch.
His dark skin is smooth, soft.
I look up into his eyes and say,
"Thank you."
