calliope, a.w.o.l.

A Poem by Verser

there's a hole in my belly
where the need is
need to write a poem
the muse is a woman for sure
la belle dame sans merci
promises with a word or phrase
like a phone prank or empty knock
she does not visit instead
she teases with a tap-and-run
and never stays anymore
that was her just now
huh

Brought a smile upon my face. Seems, I'm not the only one to encounter the tap-and-run. Thing is, and I'm learning this a lot these days, that the muse can be the "woman" or ''man'' if the poet wants it to be, but that would involve having to be tortured at some point; so why not settle on a more stable subject matter? Less ethereal, like nature or family. I've read some poets who have even tried to bury their muse by being so obscure, so gray and surreal, that anyone can fit themselves into the poem that can be about anything. And in their haste to hide their muse, they mutilate a good poem. A good idea. No, I think I would prefer to be known as a writer who writes poems like your Sister Tree, poems that don't revolve around specific angst romantic love poetry but instead universal themes. Your poetry is an excellent example of this, a road map if you will.

Enjoyed this read, and where it took me.
