The Sustainability of Maybe

The Sustainability of Maybe

Another loss chalked

Despite how careful his tread

Shattered glass still adheres to the thinnest thread

Balancing want, desire, and synonymous need

Despite how gingerly his gait

A choice made cowering in the hot breath of fate

Looked too long into the sustainability of maybe

Greedily allowing her soft edges to enter

Warmly warbling in his heart’s center

An apology hangs heavy on his lips, tripping on the syllables

Her self preservation and self respect takes wing

A chasm now divides and emptiness’s echos ring

A goodbye, then. A maxim learned.

A vile price complicit with lingering ache

They still share a sky despite his treacherous wake

Your tattered feathers

My coward’s skin

The painful lesson

Of the sustainability of maybe
