I sat and played with matches while you watched. A burst of light,
an acrid scent,
and then…
I tossed a match; we watched the flame take hold.
The shavings first,
our letters next,
and then…
I threw some more, we watched the fire grow bold.
Sweet cherry smoke,
your hand in mine,
and then…
I turned away; you watched the coals grow cold.
The water rose,
the sand swirled in,
