Broken Hearts Drawn with Chalk

Broken Hearts Drawn with Chalk

A Poem by Jessie

Little Jeanie went outside to play one day,

And found another girl sitting out on the
Sidewalk, drawing broken hearts on the ground
With colored chalk. "Hello", said Jeanie,
"Do you live in the neighborhood? Why are
Drawing broken hearts? Are you sad?"

The little girl looked up at Jeanie and
Then looked back to her drawings, and
Said, "Someone I loved very much broke my
Heart, and drawing these hearts makes the
Hurt go away. Maybe if I draw enough of them,
All of the pain will come out through my
Fingertips into the ground, and maybe someday
Rain will wash it away.

Jeanie watched the girl draw hearts for
A few moments, and the girl did not seem
To mind. Then Jeanie knelt down by the girl
And took off the bracelet that hung from
Her little wrist and held it out. On the silver
Chain hung a plastic pendant with a round yellow
Face, and a black smile. "Someone who loves me
Very much gave this smile to me one day. I think
That today, you need it more than I do.

Jeanie took the girl's hand and clipped on the
Silver bracelet, then stood up and admired
Her new friend's pretty little wrist with the
Jewelry. The little girl looked up at Jeanie and
Smiled slowly, and blew Jeanie a kiss as she
Went back home for dinner.
