Once,
On a sleepless night
When I was a young girl,
A demon boy came to the threshold
Of my bedroom door.
I still remember what he looked like:
Pale blue skin,
Large yellow eyes,
Slightly webbed fingers and toes,
And wearing a brown loincloth
Around his almost bony waist.
He stared at me a while,
Not yet saying a word,
Until I sat up in my bed,
To be sure I wasn't dreaming,
And then beckoned him to come in.
He walked to my bed, and sat across from me,
And simply said "Hello."
"Hi," said I in return.
"Would you like to dance?"
He asked me.
I smiled and took his hand
And climbed out of my sheets
Onto the carpet floor.
There was no music,
Yet we danced together so fluidly,
Holding hands,
Waltzing to the silence.
After the dance, the demon boy smiled
And told me he would give me two gifts
Of my choice,
Because I had given him two gifts:
My trust and my friendship.
"You may have any two things you desire,"
Said he, smiling at me, as we stood
With our bare toes being tickled by carpet.
With little hesitation I simply said,
"Wisdom
And
Insanity
Are all I have ever wanted."
He giggled and said to me,
"Why is it everyone wishes
For what they already have?"
He touched my temple
And closed his eyes,
Told me my wish had been granted.
He then hugged me
And whispered in my ear,
"Perhaps we will meet again for another dance."
Then he disappeared
And I haven't seen him since.
