Blackbird Named Imperfection

Blackbird Named Imperfection

A Poem by Jessie

How long do you think you can

Keep me
confined
In the
Darkest,
Coldest
Part of your mind?

Don’t ignore me!
I’m still here!
I am forever the
Black bird
Singing your sins
Between your ears.

You can keep me in my pretty cage,
Made from
Every key that has failed
To unlock
Your heart.

You can hide me behind stone
Walls, barred
Windows, and locked
Doors--
You call me
"Imperfection"
But my real name
Is yours.

Go ahead,
Try to convince the universe I don’t exist.
You can try turn away and
Leave me behind.
You can try to ignore me,
But I won’t disappear,
I will still be in your mind,
Be in every sound you hear.

They may never
See through your eyes,
Decipher your lies, or
Unmask your disguise,
But I know every weakness you hide,
Every secret you’ve tried
To let go of or deny.

No matter how many chemicals you put inside your skin,
You can never snuff out my song of your sins.

I will always be here to remind you that
Without me,
You would never be.

I am every imperfection
Behind the perfection they see.
