Empty Shores

Empty Shores

A Poem by Noah Cole
"

A storm on an empty beach...

"

There is only abandonment on the cold shore,

Waves drift over the cracked shells of the past,

The wind shifts, but there is only the smell of death,

Darkness sweeps over, blotting out the fading sun.

Lightning strikes in the distance, but the rain is pelting upon the sand.

Wind rustles the grass, and leaves a cloud of beige dust.

And Nature's fury has taken over...

The ocean is a mass of ice and that hail pours down.

Icy rain shatters against the frozen beach.

Grass covered in crystal glitters in the blizzard,

As the blue sand resists its danger.

And Nature's fury has taken over...

Looking out to the orange sunset,

A thought passes on the wind,

The sky fills with fear and dread,

A trial approaches, and future dreams are shattered,

Only the present can determine what is to come.

And a lonely sea is in still waters.

As abandonment is on the cold shore,

The waves drift over cracked shells of the past...

Author's Note

Noah Cole
(Note from Feb 2012): This is another poem from my later high school years. I have mixed feelings about this one, and as many times as I have read back over it, I still can't decide how I feel. The "vision" for this poem came about through wanting to write a piece about nature, and even some sort of chaos. The idea of an empty, lonely place being ravaged by something like a storm appealed to me. The description turned out nicely, and I like how the setting is both dark and serene. The only bad thing is, I am the author. What I mean by that is, I know what I was originally going for: what I wanted out the poem; this was not it. While it turned out nicely, and I enjoy the read, I can't help but feel like I should have done someting different with it. Either way, "Empty Shores" is still a poem that I like to present to people. As always, I appreciate any and all thoughts: critiques, suggestions, and analyses. Thanks :)
