Thoughts on All Saints' Day

Thoughts on All Saints' Day

A Poem by Monica Rae (Schaeffer) Stover

You stole savagely

from my ancestors

horrors unchecked

death beyond measure

all in the name of a savior

and now you try to tell me

that I am evil

Evil is a man made construct

created by man

cultivated by man

Bigotry

Hypocricy

Thou shalts and shalt nots

presuming your way is the only way

and that you have the only say

The sanctimony of Sunday services

and Monday morning malice

on the freeway

Polluting our Mother

without a backward glance

And teaching your children

a legacy of hate

for anyone who doesn't believe

in your eternally loving father

Yes I consort with demons

I examine them

and speak to them

and accept them

as part of me

You push your demons into a hell

that others have created

and charge them with corrupting your soul

when you commit what you deem sin

Then tell me that I am the one

who has been misled

for not believing

the fables I've been fed

by a ministry of old men

starving for control over the masses

My simple ritual

and the chants blown by the wind

contain within

all the memories

of ancient circles turning round

to another season of the wheel

to which we all are bound

My fire warms my body

and my passion

and my soul

And my magic, though rustic,

is real

Belief is beautiful

and peity profound

but only when life is led with love

can grace be found

Terrific! I like the part about talking with the demons instead of pushing them into a hell, then blaming me as if i were the one. It's fantastic also the other one I liked was "teaching your children a legacy of hate." The last stanza, however is my favorite.
