Prayer of Mourning

Merciful and Loving God

Surround and hold us in your Grace. 

All who mourn today beseech your loving compassion. 

Grief has come to us beyond our power to comprehend or overcome. 

We ask you to guide us and preserve us, 

Lift our hearts and let us not be overwhelmed 

Nor turn against you in our confusion and grief. 

Hold our hands, Lord, as we walk daily 

Through this veil of sadness and tragedy. 

Carry us in your Love and Mercy 

Until we come again to a place 

Where we can look forward 

And again know your Joy and Peace. 

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

                                                      ~Amen

Author's Note

This is a prayer I was inspired to write for my father when he lost his brother to cancer in September 2015. However, I think it’s appropriate and hopefully comforting in our current time of shock and mourning for the attacks in Paris.

yes, it is appropriate to what happened in Paris...i also relate with my father...basically out of touch...living at my sister's ...he is 96...in Deep Gap...i am so far away...he can't talk on the phone, and she gives me little or no update...it is like in a way he is already lost to me.

I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. I’m sure it’s an aching hurt difficult to live with. My dad was very close to his brother (to all his sibs, in fact).

I hope you find a way to reunite with your father and sister.

i appreciate that...i hope to see him at Christmas...she stands between us...and i have to try to make peace enough with her...but if my dad were not in the picture, i would be done with her, period.

I know some say there can be no God or savior with all the pain and violence in the world... but I say it would be much worse without God's grace surrounding us... plus people have freewill, and that is where the devil finds his loopholes.

Thank you for reading. It’s easy to give up hope and belief in the face of so much suffering. Despair is a kind of spiritual drowning. But, to give in, to give ourselves up to that despair is to abandon hope and refuse comfort.

man oh man! do i need this prayer this morning ... thank you so much for sharing ... my instinct applauds the swift retribution wrought by France's Air Force ... i want it doubled down on and joined by our own strong forces ..so sick of ISIS brutality ... incredulous at their audacity and vehemence .. but after all is said and done .. it is your prayer that is the truth ... thank you again for sharing ..and i am sorry for your families loss this past September .. :(
