A Poem by Molly Cara

Cam is cat-eyed

And two years older than I am

Last year the kids would steal glances

As he and I kissed on the rocks

In the River

Eve is cat-eyed

And two years older than I am

Last year we were the talk of the town

With our homemade makeup and overwrought

Dialogues

I was named for Miriam

So when these babies built themselves baskets

And set sail

I referred to the Testament

Bought a two-piece swim suit

Caught a plane to Egypt

And dove into the Nile

This year I’ve discovered that a matriarch

Belongs on dry land

My babies tread water in search of safe harbor

So I fish them out of the river

Set them on the sand

And walk yonder through today and

Past tomorrow,

I would have loved to cradle you.
