On Seeing

On Seeing

A Poem by Molly Cara

You are wasting your time

If you are waiting to hear on another’s lips

That which you already know.

A woman is taught not to desire

But to concern herself

With being desired,

When to desire is clearly

The greater in God’s eyes.

Surely, you, too have tired

Of looking at another and watching

Only your own reflection?

To be wanted is nothing.

One need not even be sentient

To be wanted.

To want?

This is the miracle.

If you are here only

To be seen you may as

Well be a water lily

Or a precious stone.

Be the one who sees.
