Almost August

Almost August

A Poem by Molly Cara

This morning I awoke to the smell of early spring
Though August is visible backstage
Awaiting her entrance with
Enviable patience.

God said to Abraham
Go and I will show you...

I’m accustomed to goodbyes
(Though I’ll milk an idea till
It curdles and dries)
I’m well acquainted with goodbyes

But I’m on equally intimate terms
With the space you made for me
In your arms
And with the simple fact that
When Mother Nature created
Green opal
She was only making copies of your eyes.

Go forth!
My darling, go forth
To your homeland
Bring the girl with the purple hair
Bring all my blessings, in a bag
See everything we saw and more

And as for me
I’ll have to trust the dewdrops
To remind me there was rain.
