Freckles

Freckles

A Poem by Molly

I’ve always hated those girls

Who curse their freckles and call them ugly;

I love mine.

They make me feel wild and beautiful

Like a sun-touched jungle child

Running free as a spotted leopard.

I miss them in the winter when they disappear

And I have to go back to being an ordinary girl,

The sort of girl who wears coats and gloves

And gets colds

And is afraid of bugs.

But when summer comes back they always return,

Like a galaxy of stars you thought was lost,

But was only invisible behind the clouds.

Slowly they reappear, tracing across my nose and cheekbones,

And one special one, darker than the rest, nestled in the corner of my left eye,

And suddenly I’m fearless again.

I can dive into rivers, scale fences, and climb trees.

I’m a warrior princess, fierce as the boiling sun,

And my freckles are my war paint,

A warning signal:

Stand back, and watch me conquer the world!

I love the sense of inhibition in this piece.

"They make me feel wild and beautiful
Like a sun-touched jungle child"

When I read those lines I thought "Oh, this is gonna be a good one." And it was! You are not covering your freckles with makeup--your freckles are a part of who you are. In the summertime, when everyone can see the marks that make you, you, they make you feel strong and alive and fearless. Inspiring!
