RaceA Poem by Jayashree GhoshRunning in a rat race
My name is Heart
My landlady is Meera. We live together and feel together. She is a unique character I assure you, Yet she is not unique I can't tell you why! Last night when Meera was crying I felt sad, So I asked her,"What happened? Why are you crying?" Meera said,"Nothing. I just feel so lonely." I told her, "Love is what you need." Meera said,"No one will love me." I asked,"Why?" Meera said,"Because I couldn't win the race." I said,"Try better next time." Suddenly my Mother entered from somewhere. My mother's name is Mind, She told Meera,"No one will love you." Meera was sad and so was I. But my mother went on, "Shame Meera, your parents had so many dreams surrounding you and you lost the race? You are a cheat Meera, you can't lose it, it's a crime." I said,"Mom, Meera tried her best. I know she was well-prepared." My Mom told me,"But her parents will not believe her." This time Meera said,"I was exhausted. So I couldn't complete the race." My Mom said,"It's stupid to get exhausted in the middle." Meera cried more, so I said,"Perhaps Meera didn't want to run the race.So she couldn't give her best." My Father whose name is Mr. Intellect now entered and spoke loudly, "Nonsense! Have you seen the girl next door? What a pretty girl she is! She runs amazing. Meera's parents always wanted a daughter like her." I told my Dad,"But I think that girl is a machine devoid of feelings." Dad said,"Our society demands only money and fame. Everything else in this world is secondary. You must complete the race faithfully or you will become a parasite on society. You cannot dream, you cannot think about yourself and you should never stop to relax. You must fulfil the expectations of others if you want to be happy." My Mom nodded her head. I looked at my parents blankly, Not knowing what to say! Then I looked at Meera who was wiping her tears away. Her face was tired with crying. She went to bed and slept. But I was awake the whole night, So was my Mom. Slowly I was feeling heavy, When the sun rose. I saw Meera's bed Stained with her blood all over, I asked Meera "Why did you do it?" But she didn't reply. I was choking. Then everything went dark, I called for my parents, But no one replied. Meera left me forever! © 2015 Jayashree GhoshAuthor's Note
