The VoidA Story by Mohab El-SobkyJust open and see for yourselfHere you are, walking, almost dragging your legs in this strange, bleak, foggy place. You don’t know where you’re going. All you do is just you’re flowing with the others. You try so hard to blend in till you even can’t distinguish your face from the face of that guy who’s walking beside you. But you still move on, still not knowing where you’re going. Where everybody is going. You try stop moving for a while to think, but the sea of moving souls pushes you forward despite of yourself. You try to ask anybody about the destination, but nobody seems to know or care. They all say we found everybody walking this way, so we walked with them. No matter how many of these strange souls you ask, you hear the same answer. Do they really not know? Does anybody know? After what seems like a life time, you still don’t reach your destination. This unknown that you kept walking to for as long as you can remember. But now it seems like you care less and less about the destination. And focus more and more about the walk itself. You try your best to match your walk with the others. You don’t know why exactly you’re doing that. But you don’t even know why you’re walking in the first place. By this time you seem to stop thinking. You just keep moving, seems like you became finally one of them, one of you. You see a little guy walking with you. He reminds you of someone, but you can’t really remember. But he looks curious, he questions you about your destination. You answer him that you don’t know, you’re just going with the flow. After a while you see this guy walking ahead of you. He still looks young, full of energy. All of a sudden, he turns around. You see his face as the face of someone who’s confident and determined to do something you’ve never seen, or heard about anybody that dared to do. He started walking, then running, in the opposite direction. You see this guy running, you try to stop him. Everybody is trying to stop him. They start shouting, and you with them. That this guy is doing a dangerous thing. That he’s doing the wrong thing. That he’s dangerous himself. You don’t know why you did that. You don’t know where you’re going. Also you don’t know where he’s going. But you still flinch at the sight of this guy, who’s running against the flow. You keep walking again. The suddenly the fog around you starts to clear. You start to see, for the first time since you can remember, what’s in the distant. And the sight that greets your mind is that of an endless void. You walk, but find that there’s no more road. This is the end of the walk. You keep staring at this never ending stretches of nothingness. So this is the destination that you were walking to all this time. You look on the sides and see people terrified from the sight in front of them. They try to look back, but they can’t. They never knew how to do that. You look back to that void. You don’t find it threatening at all. On the contrary, you find it greeting you like an old friend. You take a look back, thinking about the guy who went the other way. You smile, thinking that you might have done the same. Maybe you’ll meet eventually, but he took the more interesting way, maybe, you don’t know. You look again at the void. You’ve got nothing to lose anyway. All you did anyway was aimlessly walking till this. You take that final step. You start falling, but it feels like you’re feeling a light, refreshing breeze for the first time in ever. Then you think, maybe this is not the end, maybe this is the beginning. © 2015 Mohab El-Sobky |
