Here's one for all of you walking dead fans!

Let me just start with a little back story to help you along the way here! My story is based in England, it's in the same universe as the walking dead and fear of the walking dead. And it's at the beginning of the outbreak. This is the story of a man on a mission to get to his wife and children. The reason I'm writing it is that in fascinates me that there must be so many untold stories in the walking dead universe that we'd love to know. This is Michaels story.

I was 28 years old when it started to happen at first it was nothing, a mystery illness was what the government and the media told us. At first it was only in the major cities and they were isolated cases. I lived in a little market town called Dereham in the middle of Norfolk. Nothing had changed for us at all, at the start at least anyway.

We were carrying on as normal, still going to work and acting like nothing was wrong. I was an estate agent and sales had dipped, looking back now I wonder how I could have been so stupid and blind to it. The world was going to hell and I was just going about my normal business. I should have been stocking up on supplies, fortifying the house. But no I was at work getting an earful from an equally as blind manager about the lack of sales we were experiencing.

My boss was a man named roger, he was a tall man in his mid forties. You could never really predict him, when things were going well he was you best friend but in a moment he could switch. "There's a course I want to send you" said roger, "where and what is it about" I replied. "London and it's about the sales process, you seem to have forgotten what it is so I want you on a refresher course" is what he said. "London???? What about the illness going around, I have a family to think about roger, it's not feasible" I replied, I was starting to feel tense about this for a couple of reasons. Firstly I knew what was going on in the larger cities and didn't want to get ill. And secondly Vicki would kill me for having to go away at the minute.

"You will be perfectly safe, they have quarantined off all of the infected areas, you'll be going to barking which is completely illness free" he said. "When is it?" I replied, "tomorrow morning, you go on this course or you leave" and with that he walked in to his office. Oh s**t I thought to myself! I better ring Vicki, I knew what her reaction would be. She would say your not going and I would have to explain that I needed to. I braced myself for the call, "hi babe, um I have to go away with work tomorrow!" I tried to say it defiantly in the hope my tone would put her off arguing with me. "Well we're do you have to go what time will you be back?" She replied. "London it's only a one day course, I will be back late tomorrow evening". "Well that's not happening is it" silence I didn't say anything back. "Are you joking you've said you will go? Have you not seen what's going on in the cities at the moment? And not just that you've been late nearly every night this week! When are the kids ever going to get some time with you" I just let her rant for a few minutes at the end of the day she was right to be annoyed but we both knew I had no choice. I was going to London and that was that.

I went home after work that evening, I always get home just in time for bedtime for the kids. I have two children my daughters are called Molly who is 5 and Elsie who is 2. They both hide every night when o go in usually in terrible places, normally under a throw on the sofa. To top it off they giggle the whole time while I pretend that I don't know where they are. This night was no different, I was greeted by Vicki at the door and she said her usual "I don't know where the kids have gone daddy". At this point Elsie starts giggling uncontrollably, and I check everywhere in the room that isn't the obvious giggling bulge under the red throw. In the end I pretend to give up and take a seat on top of the throw to even more fits of giggles, and I discover the little monsters under there. We did our usual run around like animals roaring at each other until Vicki has had enough and wants them to start calming down for bed. I took them up as I do every night brushed there teeth, took them to the toilet and got them in to there pyjamas. Elsie goes down first with her bottle of milk. And while she's falling asleep I read Molly a bed time story. Tonight was the gruffalo my favourite. I turn the lights and go downstairs unsure of whether there will still be an issue about training tomorrow or whether it's an accepted fact now.

We discussed it through the night and although she wasn't happy but we both knew that there was no option. We spent the night together cuddling on the sofa and watching house of cards on Netflix. Had I know what was about to happen I'd have made a bigger effort that night. This was the last time I'd experience a "normal night" ever again.

The next morning cake and I got up at 5 am to get ready and make sure I'd packed all of my bags properly. I took a shower and was dressed before anybody else awake. They woke up in there usual order first was Elsie at 6am walking around making as much noise as she could. Quickly followed by Molly being equally as noisy but slightly less annoying to poor sleeping Vicki as at least she has the courtesy to make all of he noise in her room. And then finally at about 6.30am Vicki wakes up after about 30minutes of Elsie climbing all over her. This was just in time for me to give them all hugs and kisses and take the 2 hour drive to London.

I left and drove through town in order to get on to the A47 everything seemed as usual. Although I did notice that there was a lot mother traffic heading towards Dereham than I thought there would be at this early hour. I noticed it even more when I eventually got on the motorway, there was virtually no traffic heading in towards London but lots heading away. Even as It started approaching rush hour there was literally maybe another 2 cars the whole way.

I arrived in barking at 8.34am I had twenty five minutes to get parked and get a coffee before the course started. It was being held in an old hotel on the high street. Thankfully it had its own car park as anyone who's ever parked in London knows finding a spot can take longer than the drive there sometimes. The hotel it's self was a large run down looking place, you could tell it was once a Half decent hotel but with the area around it had not been looked after well. I must be honest I was dreading it. Not just the fake enthusiasm from the area director leading the course but from the up themselves cocky estate agents I would meet there.

Once I'd parked I walked in to the reception and there was no one there, I rang the bell on the desk and waited. After about 2 minutes an older gentleman came to the desk, he looked almost surprised to see me. "I'm here for the sales success course today" I said. He looked at me almost puzzled. "Sales success course? That was cancelled two weeks ago" he said. Now as much as this news annoyed me it wasn't a surprise to me me. It really was the type of thing that roger would get wrong, look at the positives I thought at least I don't have work today. I was thinking I'd be able to drive straight home and spend the day with Vicki and the kids.

I turned around to leave the building as I approached the front door of the hotel I noticed just how loud it was outside. There were sirens everywhere and lots of shouting going on. Now I know I'm a Norfolk boy and not used to the hustle and bustle but this was louder than it should have been. I walked outside and the shouting I was hearing turned to screams. All of a sudden one of the approaching police cars pulled over and 2 large policemen stepped out both brandishing semi automatic rifles. They pointed there weapons at a large group of people walking towards them. I wondered why with all the screaming that was going on the people they were targeting were actually fairly quiet. They were walking quite quickly but not running by any means, and they were a mixture of people, young, old, black, white and Asian, this wasn't a gang. The officers screamed at them to halt but they didn't, they kept walking towards the officers and they opened fire.

By this point I was down on the ground hoping not to get caught in the cross fire, but I couldn't help watching this group of people getting mown down by bullets. The policemen must have let of about a hundred bullets each or it felt like it any way, the majority of the group fell to the floor but a couple of them just kept walking forward. I remember thinking that the policemen must have been terrible shots to miss two of them with all those bullets. It wasn't until the ones that had fallen got straight back up and started moving forwards again that I realised something was wrong with this picture. I couldn't witness this anymore I ran back in to the hotel and the receptionist greeted me again. "Have you seen what's going on outside?" I asked. "No but I heard it, my brother in law just called me and said one the quarantined zones had been breached" he replied.

I was still trying to compute in my head what had just happened, and now this guy is telling me that the illness has come out of the quarantined areas! The receptionist looked at me rather sheepishly "do you know what this infection people are coming down with does?" He asked. "Of course I know I watch the tv like everyone else, you get a high fever and it can lead to death" I said. "Yes that's true but do you know what happens after?" He said. "After? What do you mean after? After they die?" I asked extremely confused by his line of questioning. "Yes after they die! When they come back" now I started to think this guy was strange at this point, and really wanted to leave and get back to the comfort of my market town home, but I thought I'd indulge him. "What do you mean come back?" I said. They rise again after they die, it's not them just there bodies, always hungry and wanting to eat live flesh!" He said very calmly considering what he's just told me. I obviously thought he was mad by this point. "What are you talking about, that's impossible, and besides the media hasn't said anything about that, how would you know?" I said trying not to be to condisending. "The media and the government don't want you to know, they don't want country wide panic, but I know, my brother in law works for the disease control centre in London, he's been begging me to leave the city for about two weeks now, but I was born in this place and I will stay here until I die, I'm going no where" he said defiantly.

Well this was enough for me to leave, "thanks for the heads up, I'm going to get going now!" I said hoping not to alarm him as he was clearly a nut. "It's fine I know it sounds unrealistic but you will see, they won't be able to keep this contained for much longer, soon the whole country will see what's going on. One word of advice for you though, if you come across one of the infected kill it!, and if you can't do that run from it, whatever you do don't let it bite or scratch you" he said. The whole time I was moving closer and closer to the door "ok thanks for that" I said trying not to anger the clearly unhinged person in front of me. As I opened the door to walk out he shouted to me "when you kill one go for the head, you need to kill the brain" with that I turned and left.

As I got outside I couldn't help notice that the police car was still there but there were no officers to be found. The road was completely clear other than the one police car and the group of people had disappeared. There was a huge blood stain on the ground outside the hotel though. F**k this I thought I'm getting out of my car and back to Norfolk. I walked to the car park and got in my car and started the engine. I had a quick look at my phone before o got going to see if Vicki had text me, I always put my phone on silent for work reasons during the day and often miss calls or message. I checked my phone to see 4 missed calls from her, she never calls me normally it's always a text message so I knew something must be up. I wanted to ring her right there and then but I was far to freaked out by what I had just seen. Get going I thought and I'll call her on the way.

The roads were quiet on my way out and back on to the main road until I got to the junction anyway, the traffic from there on to the motorway was gridlocked. At least it was an opportunity to call home and make sure everything was OK. "Michael thank god you called I've been trying to get hold of you all morning" she said sounding rather panicked. "Sorry babe my phone was on silent, good news though the course was cancelled I'm coming home". "The infection..... It's in Dereham! This morning there has been ambulances and police cars all over town, people are saying that there was a man in town biting people" she said. "Really biting people? Are you and the kids ok? Are you at home". "Yes we're fine were all home but I really want you back here!". "That's fine I'm on my way now but the traffic is a nightmare I'll be as quick as I can" I replied. "Just get here I don't feel safe, and there's some weird stuff happening, I could hear Mary from next door crying really loudly earlier she stopped after a while, but now she's in her garden just wandering around". " what do you mean wondering around? Is she ok? Have you spoken to her?" I said. "No not yet I don't know she just seems a bit strange I don't feel comfortable approaching her" she replied. "Babe it's Maria look I'm on the phone just pop in the garden and ask her if she's alright" I said sternly, I liked Maria she was a good neighbour and often kept an eye on the kids for us if we needed to go out. "Ok I'm walking out there now" there was a slight pause and I could hear her calling Maria's name in the garden. All of a sudden she screamed "WHAT ARE YOU DOING MARIA! Stop it stop it" she was shrieking! "Vicki what's going on? Listen to me what's going on?" She wasn't answering me.
