The Potato Theory

The potato is a very interesting crop. It has over 5,000 cultivated varieties, and 200 (sub)species, that can be cross-bred. This fascinating plant has been at the front of many heated debates over its character. We, as a people, cannot agree if its deemed a root, a vegetable, or a starchy food(s) in place of carbohydrates. It is ghostly toxic while ripe, and has a reactive skin to allow persons to tell when inedible.

I have always been vastly intrigued by potatoes, for many of reason. Whether as hashbrowns for breakfast, french fries for lunch, potato chips as a snack, or in a pie for dessert, the potato is a go-to. It is undeniably one of the most diverse crops, all while retaining a humble appearance.

The potato theory goes as follows, which is less about potatoes than the name insinuates.

The potato is (mostly) found in a dull brown, matte, unappetizing skin. You open it up and found an unappealing inner section, it has no pit, no seeds, no bright colors. It is over all visually undesirable. The potato is one of those most bleak vegetables found, yet the life it lives is so inspiring. It was the first crop grown in outer space. Spud has been used as a fashion piece, wearing blossoms in the hair during parades and the like. The potato is 80% water yet, can provide almost every dietary beneficiary we as man need to survive.

The same theoretical mindset can be placed in many aspects of life. I know a guy, who dresses very plain, raggedy unappealing outfits, similar each day. You would walk past this man without noticing, yet he is one of the most exciting people i know. Always pushing the boundaries, plays multiple instruments, studies psychology in his free time, started a successful business at 18. Cars can be the same, if you are into the sport of racing you will undoubtebly once in a while see a car that looks like it belongs in the junkyard and not at the race track. You see it line up next to a million dollar show piece, and outrun it like it was sitting still.

I guess maybe it is less of a theory, and more of a random phenomenon. We walk past things everyday, whether people, buildings, cars, plants, that have this whole top secret extra-ordinary life that we couldn’t have dreamt up. I guess its a form > function algorithm, that is not appetizing to normies.

Sometimes the most dull looking things in life are the most extraordinary, don’t overlook whats right in front of you.
